DOT examinations now offered at Complete Chiropractic & Wellness Center
Overview
As of May 21, 2014, all interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers must have their medical examination performed by certified medical examiner. This change was mandated to assure your physical qualifications met guidelines set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Individuals that require this examination include those operating in interstate commerce that have gross vehicle weight or weight ratings exceeding 10,001 pounds, transporting 9-15 passengers for compensation, transporting 16 or more passengers regardless of compensation status, and those transporting hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding.
The Examination
The medical examination is a thorough examination, as designated by the FMCSA, beginning with gathering a detailed health history. As mandated by the FMCSA standards your vitals, urinalysis, vision, hearing, and physical examination will be considered for the length of time your medical certificate is valid. The examination takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Upon completion you will be presented with copies of the report form and issued a medical certificate valid for the length of time determined by your doctor.
Helpful Tips
High blood pressure is a fairly common occurrence in the American population and a common reason for reduced qualification or disqualification. The FMCSA has set a bench mark of 140/90 for blood pressure.
Diabetes is another frequent condition responsible for reduced qualification or disqualification. The FMCSA limits the length of time valid for non-insulin dependent diabetes and disqualifies those that are insulin dependent. Insulin dependent diabetics may apply for the federal diabetes exception.
Helpful blood pressure & diabetes tips:
Good diet
Regular exercise
Avoiding excessive alcohol usage
Avoid tobacco use
Limiting caffeine intake
If you are aware of of prior health conditions, it's helpful and saves time to bring in most recent documentation indicating active treatments, medications, current status, level readings, and any future treatment recommendations.
